Dimensions of training Delivery

Participants respond best in a training workshop when a trainer communicates, motivates and instructs them in the way that attracts engagement and interaction of participant. Below are some key points to be taken into consideration to make a training workshop successful:

  1. Putting participants at ease: A trainer gets the maximum participation from participation when he creates an environment of ease that makes participants comfortable and remain involved throughout the workshop.
  2. Opening the training Session: A powerful opening of a training session sets the tone of the entire training workshop. This can be done after a quick introduction of the trainer with an icebreaker. The ice breaker can be done through a video, creative introduction. The purpose of this ice breaker is to quickly warm up the group with fun and laughter and establish a positive connect between themselves and with the trainer.
  3. Establishing objectives: The trainer introduces the topic after establishing ones credibility on the training topic by stating credentials and past experiences to gain participant buy in. The participants will get to know what will be covered in the workshop through an overview of the training topics main points. The trainer sets expectations from the participants through an interactive discussion where participants convey their own expectations. A mutual agreement is established between the trainer and participants to have a successful training session that will cater to all training outcomes.
  4. Adapting a delivery style: It is crucial for a trainer to scan the audience profile to use a combination of different delivery styles in the training session. This involves an in-depth analysis of participants and their behaviours in the course of the workshop.
  5. Supporting participants at each stage: Success of any training workshop highly depends on the trainers sensitivity to the energy level and alertness of the participants especially the ones who are fading away. The trainer observes participants reaction and understanding at each phase of the workshop and ensures that everyone stay focused and engaged throughout the workshop.
  6. Checking interaction and interest levels and maintaining high energy: A trainer should always plan a workshop with a blend of instructor led discussion, videos, activities and assessments.  Long periods of lecture can be punctuated with activities, exercises or videos to keep participant engagement high and bring back the ones who are fading away.
  7.  Questioning techniques: Asking the right questions at the right time will help a trainer to extract maximum information from participants before, during and after the training. Using open ended, close ended, probing questions and a combination of all will enable a trainer to check the participants level of understanding, grasp and retain information.
  8. Encourage participants to interact, share their viewpoints and real life work place examples: An interactive training session will help participants in understanding training concepts better when they relate these concepts to their workplace. This will probe participants to put learning into practice.
  9. Testing skill development: Doing frequent tests by applying workable test methods will help a trainer if the participants have developed the skill sets targeted as objectives of the workshop. This is a way to determine if the training goals have already been achieved.
  10. Closing the session on a positive note: It is highly advisable to have time for questions after completing all phases of the training and giving a summary highlighting the important points in the workshop. The trainer can confirm the achievement of training objectives that were set at the start and conclude the session on a positive note.
